Gurgaon District of
Haryana covers an area of 2,760 sq km with
Gurgaon City as the headquarters. The name 'Gurgaon' is derived from the name of Guru
Dronacharya.
Yudhishtira, the eldest of the
Pandavas, presented the area to the guru as his gurudakhshina. From that time onwards the place has been known as 'guru grama' (the village of the master) and it was changed to Gurgaon as the time passed. Gurgaon is surrounded by
Delhi and
Rajasthan.
Hindus represent a majority of the population. Economy of the region mainly depends on agriculture. Wheat, gram, barley, bajra and jowar, oilseeds, fodder and vegetable are the major crops. Cows, buffaloes, and goats are the main livestock.
The festivals celebrated are
Holi, Janmashtami,
Dussehra, Diwali,
Shivratri, and Gugga Naumi. Places of tourist attractions are
Dhankot, Saiyad, Ata, malab, Sanghel, Ujina, and Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.
