Amreli District




Amreli, the smallest district in Saurashtra (one of the four major regions of Gujarat), was a part of Bombay state and became a separate district of Gujarat after independence. It is a major groundnut and sugarcane producing area. Amreli District derived its name from the name Amaravati. It covers an area of 6,760 sq km.

Amreli is industrially backward and its economy depends on agriculture. The main crops are bajra, jowar, and cotton. Now diamond industry is developing here. Jafrabad, Kodinar, and Rajula are the major towns. The famous festivals are Janmashtami (dedicated to Lord Krishna) and Vijayadashmi (dedicated to Goddess Saraswati).

Attractions nearby are Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Khodiyar mandir, and Pipavav port.
