Konkan Railways

Konkan Railways is a separately incorporated railway zone of the Indian Railways. It operates along the Konkan Coast (Karavali area) of India. Konkan Railways consists of a single 760 km route from Roha to Mangalore along the scenic regions of the West Coast. The first train on the completed track was flagged off in the year 1998, making Konkan Railways the first means of mass transport on the western coastal line. It navigates through the dense forest cover and landscape fringed with beautiful beaches, misty hill stations, paddy fields, coconut groves and mango orchards. There are nearly 2,000 big and small bridges and 88 tunnels.

The Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) has invented quite a few new innovative technologies to ensure safety. The indigenous state-of-the-art Anti Collision Device (ACD) technology of KRC is capable of avoiding collision between trains. It is currently under-going intensive field trials. Konkan Railway has devised another innovative, economic and eco-friendly mass rapid transportation solution, namely the Sky Bus Metro. The Self Stablising Track (SST) devised by KRC aims to make tracks much more safe and sustainable. It is also undergoing trials at present. Konkan Railways connects the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. There are 49 crossing stations and 8 halt stations on the Konkan Railways and the major stations are Bhatkal, Honavar, Karwar, Kumta, Madgaon, Mulki, Murdeshwar, Panvel, Rajapur, Sindhudurg, Surathkal, Thane, and Udupi. Important super fast trains such as Delhi-Trivandrum Rajdhani Express and Gandhidham Express are now being diverted over the Konkan Railways.

Konkan Railways provides the facility of computerised ticket reservation. The normal journey of an express train across this track ranges between 12:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs. It has also provided vegetarian and non vegetarian restaurants and tea stalls at the stations to serve the passengers.
