South Goa District covers the entire southern part of the state of
Goa. Its headquarters is located at
Margao, a growing commercial and industrial center. Natural beaches, temples, waterfalls, hill spots, paddy fields and coconut gardens make South Goa a splendid place. South Goa shares its boundaries with
North Goa District in the north,
Uttara Kannada District of
Karnataka in the east and south and the
Arabian Sea in the west. South Goa covers an area of 1,966 sq km. Chandranath at
Paroda, Dudhsagan in Sanguem taluk and Cormolghant in
Canacona Taluk are the important peaks in South Goa. Rivers of South Goa such as Zuari, Talpona, Sal and Galgibag are mainly used for transportation.
Vasco da Gama is an important city in South Goa District.
Beaches such as Velsao, Majorda,
Sinquerim and Mobor are long and wide. They have fine powder white sand and the shores are lined along by coconut palms. Bogmalo, Colva,
Betul, Canaguinim, Agonda,
Palolem, Rajbhag and Polem are the other famous beaches in South Goa. Cottigao Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa is the second largest of Goa's wildlife sanctuaries. It is covered with dense forest which is a habitat of deer, gazelles, monkeys and other fauna.
