Mehrauli, a historical place dotted with numerous archeological monuments, is situated in
South Delhi. The place is rich with a large number of
baolis and other treasures associated with the glory of the
Mughal era.
Mehrauli was created by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak after demolishing several Hindu temples and replacing it with Islamic structures. One of the main Islamic structures was Qutab Minar - the tower of victory. Around Qutab Minar there are several ruins of Islamic monuments, which date back to 11th and 12th century, including the mausoleum of Saint Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, Iron Pillar, Shamsi Talab, a mosque and tombs of rulers.
Chattarpur Mandir complex – dedicated to Goddess Durga and Mehrauli Dadabari complex - famous shrine dedicated to Dadagurudev and the Garden of Five Senses are other places worth visiting. Phoolwalon Ki Sair, the flower sellers festival, is a major draw.
Mehrauli is 18 km south of New Delhi Railway Station. ISBT at Kashmiri Gate is about 24 km north.
