Nalanda District




Nalanda is one of the important districts in Bihar with an area of 2,367 sq km and a population of two million. Bihar Sharif is the district headquarters. Rice, potato, and onion are some of the important agricultural products. The Phalgu and Mohane are the two important rivers.

Founded in the 5th Century, Nalanda is known as the ancient seat of learning. Emperor Ashoka built many monasteries, temples and viharas here. The world's most ancient university lies in ruins here, 62 km from Bodhgaya and 90 km south of Patna.

The best season to visit is from October to March. Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall, Nalanda University Complex, Swarajpur Baragon Sun Temple, and Nalanda Museum are the major tourist attractions.
