Rohtas District

Rohtas District in Bihar has an area of 7,213 sq km and a population of 2.5 million. There are three subdivisions Sasaram, Bikramganj, and Dehri.

Rohtas is historically important. It is said to have been the abode of aboriginals whose chief representatives now are the Bhars, the Cheers and the Oraons. King Sahasrabahu is connected with Sasaram, the headquarters of Rohtas. Sahasrabahu had a fierce fight with saint Parashuram, the legendary protector of brahmins, as an outcome of which Sahasrabahu was killed. The name Sasaram is said to be derived from Sahasrabahu and Parasuram. Rohtas hill is also linked to Rohitashwa, son of Raja Harishchandra, a famous king who was highly regarded for his piety and truthfulness.

Paddy and wheat are the main crops. Cement factories at Banjari and Dalmia Nagar, vegetable oil mill, and paper factory at Dalmia Nagar are some of the important industries. The Son and Kaw are the two major rivers.
