Bhumij Kols

Tribal group of Bihar

Bhumij Kols is a tribal group of Bihar. They mainly occupy East Singhbhum and West Singhbhum districts, west and south of the Kasari river. They are racially related to the tribal group called Mundas and resemble them. They have a dark brown complexion, thick nose and lips, broad chests and well developed hands. They declare themselves as Hindus but their hierarchical position in the community is not clear. Their religion shows a mixture of Hinduism and traditional tribal observances. Some of the village deities are still worshipped by this group.

Bhumij Kols have adopted the surname 'Singh.'
