Rohtasgarh Fort

Steeped in history, Rohtasgarh Fort, now in a ruined state, was once the largest and strongest forts in India. It is situated at the top of the Kaimur Hills in Rohtas District.

As per legends, Rohita, the son of King Harischandra, realizing danger to his life, stayed here several years in exile. The fort is named after this prince.

Also known as Quila Rohtas, this fort is an outstanding example of early Mughal architecture. It was the shelter place of Mughal family, particularly in times of war. Military operations were also undertaken here. According to records, there are 84 passages to the hill with 14 main gate entry, of which 10 were closed by Sher Shah Suri.

Today the fort, which forms a part of a plateau, is a perfect place for eco-tourism projects. It is at distances of 45 km and 39 km from Dehri on Sone and Sasaram respectively.
