Sonarai

Sonarai is a local festival celebrated at Agamani, in Dhubri District of Assam. It is a performance observed by the agrarian class.

Sonarai is believed as a Tiger God. This festival is conducted in order to appease the god to protect the human lives and cattle from the attack of tiger. This is an old tradition which is continued now also. The worship of Tiger God is actually the worship of Krishna-Lord Balram.

Sonarai Festival has two phases - Magan and Puja, and is celebrated in Pous (December-January) and Magh (January-February) months respectively. During the festival time, a symbolic form or human shape of Krishna-Balram is made of clay.
