Barpeta is the administrative headquarters of
Barpeta District,
Assam. It is about 12 km from Howly and 8 km from Bhella.
The most noteworthy feature of the town is that it is divided into 22 Hattis, each inhabited by the devoted followers and families of the Gurus. These Hattis are managed by the Satra administration.
Barpeta is also famous for its traditional handicrafts. Barpeta Satra is the prime attraction here. Sundaridiya Satra, Chinpara Vithi, Kamarkuchi Than Satra, Patbaushi Satra, Ganakkuchi Satra and Baradi Satra are the local places of interest in the vicinity.
Manas National Park is 51 km away. Three major rivers including Manas, Beki and Brahmaputra, which criss-cross the length and breadth of Barpeta, attract both environmentalists as well as tourists.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the nearest airport. Barpeta Road Railway Station is the nearest railhead (21 km). The town is well connected to the National Highway 31, which lies about 16 km away. Regular bus ply between Barpeta and Guwahati.
