Papum Pare District




Papum Pare is a land of lush green forests and deep river valleys. The state capital Itanagar is situated in the Papum Pare District. It is situated in the north-eastern part of India, covering an area of 2,875 sq km. The Papum Pare District is bounded by East Kameng District in the west and the state of Assam in the south.

Papum Pare District has a population of approximately 0.1 million, including the Nishis and Mikir tribes. The language of Nishis belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family. ‘ Nyokum’ is a festival celebrated by Nishis during the first week of February. Itafort, Ganga Lake, Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum, Zoological Park, Buddhist Gompa, Theravada Buddhist Temple and Rono Hills are the major tourist destinations. The Pare, Panior and Dikrong are the main rivers.

The district has helipads at Naharlagun and Itanagar. Harmoti (in Assam) is the nearest railway station. Yupia is the headquarters of Papum Pare District.
