Adilabad District lies at the northern tip of
Andhra Pradesh. It is situated on the banks of the river
Godavari which flows over the topography of the
Deccan plateau giving rise to beautiful waterfalls. According to
Hindu mythology, sage
Veda Vyas sanctified Adilabad by penance and meditation. Adilabad covers an area of 16,105 sq km and the population is approximately 2.5 million.
Kuntala Waterfalls,
Basar Saraswati temple, Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary, and Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary are important tourist destinations.
Nirmal town is renowned for its wooden toy industry. The fine glazed toys and paintings are known by the name of the town.
There is a temple, the only one of its kind in South India, which is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Fossils belonging to prehistoric period were discovered at
Asifabad and Sirpur. Archeologists have revealed the definite existence of a megalithic culture in this area.
Adilabad has several large and small scale industries which include mining and quarrying, agri-business and food processing, cotton yarn and cotton fabrics, wool, silk and man-made fiber, paper pulp and paper based, and non-metallic mineral products.
Adilabad is easily accessible by train as it lies on the
Secunderabad-
Manmad meter-gauge line of the South Central Railway.
