Balighattam is located in
Visakhapatnam District of
Andhra Pradesh. It lies 3 km from Narsipatnam, on the banks of river Varahanandi. Balighattam is noted for the Brahmalingeswara temple which was supposedly built by
Lord Brahma. This temple stands at the foot of a small hill on the western bank of Varahanandi River. During his incarnation as Varaha, Lord
Vishnu created the river Varahanandi.
The name 'Balighattam' has associations with the deposits of white clay found in the riverbed, taken to be the ashes of a sacrifice performed by the legendary monkey king Bali.
