Penukonda Fort, which lies in the town of Penukonda, is historically one of the most important forts of the Southern Hindu kingdoms. Built during the 13th century by a Kakatiya ruler, the fort is an evidence to the sculptural beauty of South Indian architectural style. It is said that, originally, the fort contained 365 temples, which were destroyed by several rulers. The visitors can see the remains of four massive stone gateways, which are similar to those of
Sanchi and some beautiful pieces of sculpture.
